Though there are many web design programs available, I prefer to use Netscape Composer. It is easy to follow and students tend to love it! Here are some of the basic guidelines you may want to share with the students before getting started.1. Ask the students to select a topic for their Quilt and research that topic on the World Wide Web.
2. If the students find any particularly interesting pages, they should Bookmark them
3. The students should then spend at least half a class period (or homework time) designing their web page on paper.
4. Have the students write their bibliography, letter or other content on WORD before beginning composer
6. Have the students CUT and PASTE their Word document into NetScape Composer and change the font size, if necessary.
5. Have the students select an imagine from the web, or from a book (this would need to be scanned) to paste onto their page. If they get this from the web, they should select the image, click the left side of the mouse, select "Save As" and save it into their folder.
6. Now the students can click "Format" from the top of the page and scroll down to "Page colors and Properties". They can pick their favorite colors to use as the font and background color!
7. Keep reminding the students to save their work and remember, when you name your page avoid using spaces and use all lower or all capital case letters!
8. Now they are ready to add at least 2 links to their page. First, they should link their page to the class web page. They can do this by clicking the Link button and then clicking the Browse button. The teacher should instruct them on the name of the "master page" and the students should choose that as the link to be connected to the word on their page they highlighted.
The same steps are used for linking pages to the WWW except instead of clicking "browse" the students should type in the URL.9. Once the students have completed this process, the teacher should FTP it and maybe even connect it to the school web site!
10. Be sure that the students are having fun while doing this!
