Making Quilts
has been a way of expressing oneself for centuries upon centuries.
Not only does each piece have symbolism, but the Quilt Maker holds the
creative power to share their own views and feelings. Many pieces
make up a Quilt and once all of the pieces are sewn together, ONE , UNITED
Quilt is the product.
Today, as
we embrace the new world of Technology, teachers can bring to life this
tradition by combining it with technology and creating a
Virtual
Quilt Making exercise.
This is a great way to introduce web designing to a class! The students will learn how to use Netscape Composer to create their page. They will learn how to use different search engines to research the information they would like to include on their piece, they will learn how to use spell check, change the color of the font and background of their page and finally, they will learn how to link their page (piece) to the Class quilt and additional resources they would want to viewer to look at.
I have provided complete details for any teacher or parent who does not know how to create their own web page. It is easy, fun and will definitely get the children involved and excited about using technology!
I have provided an EXAMPLE of this project. I worked with two 5th grade elementary class and we made a Virtual Quilt of recent Famous Virginians. These students made the actual quilt which became their class gift to the School upon graduation as well as this Virtual Quilt. This type of activity could be used with any state or city! Making a Virtual Quilt can be as many things as your imagination allows for it to be!
Good luck and enjoy this Introduction to making Web Pages!!
