After your group has done the research on your assigned stereotype using the Valley of the Shadows site, you will write INDIVIDUAL letters to the editor stating your findings. Your letter should be based on your charts and notes from your research and should include at least the following information:
the stereotype you researched
whether you are supporting or dispelling the stereotype
evidence supporting your position
sources where you found your information (e.g. newspaper, diary, letters, etc.)
how your results differed between the North and the South (if applicable)
how bias influenced how you interpreted the information you found
Your letter should be written for a paper during present day. That is to say that it should not be written as if you were living during the time of the Civil War. Most of these stereotypes did not come about until after the Civil War.
