Project Title: The ethical, cultural and societal issues of technology implementation: The role
    of social studies

Description: The Internet provides an extraordinary tool for enriching teaching and learning
in the social studies; yet, safe and productive participation in cyberspace necessitates the
ability to make informed decisions and apply online critical thinking skills. Social studies
educators have the opportunity to foster
the social and emotional skills of young people in
cyberspace, by promoting issues of accountability, responsibility, tolerance, and respect
.
This initiative models active participation in a multidisciplinary, community-oriented
intervention effort which is an extension of participatory citizenship, engaging educators
and students in a dialogue about critical social issues and public problems. The cornerstone
of this work is the creation of safety for vulnerable children and the advancement of
advocacy efforts by parents, schools, and communities to evolve a culture of caring online.

Furthermore, exploration of the social, ethical, legal and human issues surrounding
technology is an integral component of the ISTE National Education Technology Standards
for Teachers and Students. This project will focus on disseminating constructive solutions
and a plan of action for the social studies, which fosters protective and productive online
learning experiences for children and youth.
