Butterfly Summary Assignment

We made observations on our butterflies so that we could report what we learned to others, adding to scientific knowledge of this species. This is your chance to report as many observations as you can about the stages of the Painted Lady’s life cycle.

• Reports should be word processed. If you do not have access to a word processor at home, see me.
• The best report will be placed on the class website.

Your Summary should have two parts:

(1) Introduction

(2) Life Cycle of the Painted Lady

Here is what you should include:

(1) Introduction: 20 points

ü Describe the difference between observational (hypothesis generating) studies vs. experimental (hypothesis testing) studies.

ü Explain an observation vs. an inference.

(2) Life Cycle of the Painted Lady Butterfly (Scientific name= Vanessa carduii): 30 points

ü 4 different life stages (caterpillar, chrysalis, adult, egg), and the approximate length of time your butterfly was in that stage

ü For each stage, describe appearance and behavior (for example: what did they look like, measurements, pictures [if possible], what did they eat, etc.)

Include:

ü Host plant (mallow family- we had mallow and hollyhock plants, why is it called a host plant)

ü Surprising observations (anything that you weren’t expecting)

Your report will be worth 50 points.
