Digital Imagery in the Mathematics
Classroom
| |
|
Digital images can act as a link between abstract mathematical concepts and real-world applications. When digital images are imported into a program like Geometers' Sketchpad, students can investigate mathematical concepts in several ways. The slides and sketches below illustrate how students can: collect data from images of a satellite dish to investigate parabolic functions; manipulate images of a rooftop to investigate slope; add auxillary lines to da Vinci's Last Supper to investigate perspective paintings; and overlay golden rectangles on images of the Parthenon and da Vinci's Vitruvian Man to investigate golden ratios.
