Exploring Escher-Like Tessellations

Activity Description Activity Guide

This activity provides a look into non-regular, Escher-like tessellations. This activity comes from the LCSI website, www.microworlds.com/library/math/escher/tip.html. Tessellations are an arrangement of closed shapes that completely cover the plane without overlapping or leaving gaps. This activity looks to the connection of art and mathematics in the vein of the art of M.C. Escher.

Mathematics: This activity explores Escher-Like shapes and symmetry.

Mathematical Thinking: This activity will reinforce studentsí mathematical spatial reasoning specifically dealing with tiling a plane.

Technology: Students will use built in functions within MicroWorlds including the shape editor, pencil, color palate, selection tool, dragging objects, erasing and magnifiers.
