Using Statistical Regression to Investigate
Track and Field Records

Activity Description Activity Guide

Regression equations are used to investigate world records from the world of track and field.

Mathematics:  Data, scatterplots, modeling, and regression equations

Mathematics Thinking: Students will model data, using regression equations.  Students will discuss the strengths and weaknesses of the model and make predictions about future world records.

Technology: Students will use the TI-83Plus to analyze data.  This lesson assumes students are familiar with the statistical features of the TI-83Plus calculator.

Below are some sample screen shots of the TI-83Plus calculator.
